A moneylender is found dead the morning after Diwali. Six days later, his cook confesses.

Seth Govardhan Malpani held half the bazaar's debts in Raibagh, a cantonment town in the Kumaon hills, and all of its grudges. Bhola Ram, his cook of nineteen years, says he crushed dhatura seed into the nightly badam milk because the Seth was seizing his family's terrace fields. He says it calmly, on tape, without regret. Convicted on his own words. Life sentence.

Eleven years later his daughter, now a legal-aid paralegal, finally obtains the complete case file her father's plea bargain buried. At the back of it sits the exhumation report her petition forced: the Seth's body contains no dhatura at all.
